Diamonds and Pearls SDE

oh yes, I especially loved the detailled story how the NPG was put together
the BluRay was actually the first thing I checked out (and the main reason for getting the set in the first place)
the Glam Slam show is truly fantastic, the Special Olympics very nice as well
the picture quality of the video collection is a bit of a downer though, but they just can't work magic on the source material

I will go over the Vault CDs in detail over the weekend and also check the remaster compared to the original CD
on the SOTT set the remaster was superb, on this one I expect not that much of a difference
however I can't wait to get my hands on the ATMOS audiophile disc in a few more weeks

I'll be interested to hear your opinion on the remaster compared to the original.

Hello! What is the ATMOS audiophile disc? What is ATMOS?

We watched Galmslam on saturday night, what a show. That was worth the price of the box set alone.

I opened the box!! I’m just enjoying holding all the different pieces, sliding the cd’s out of the sleeves, enjoying the design and familiarizing myself with the all of it. I listened to the first vault cd. As always, must listen more than once… but, so far , I’m loving it 😊 and, happy to find the pages in the book that talk of each track, after leafing through from cover to cover. Lots to take in. Massive. And basically happy to be on the other side of breaking the shrink wrap. Contented *sigh* 😘

I haven't got it, as none have been bought into New Zealand. This is typical of the Amerocentric estate that thinks Princes fans are only Americanos.
All I have seen is the 1 and 2 disc and record sets, no super deluxes. No wonder no one really cares about him anymore where I am. The estate is useless and should be sacked!

Hadn't thought about what shipping to NZ would cost. Must be a fortune.

Not that much, ordered it on Amazon, claims free shipping, but overall cost of $318.00 - Ouch!!!

At the same time, the Peso Neuva Zelanda is worth only 57 US cents, so its about $185USD.

The best I can find in NZ is the 4 Lp set which includes only the album (Spread onto 2 records) and the usual Bsides. That is costing an extortionate $268.00!!!!

And the store has the gall to say its "new reduced vinyl" prices - what from the Exosphere to the Ionosphere?

318NZD to get the super deluxe cd set? That’s roughly a direct conversion USD to NZD, yes? With no shipping charge. At least, that’s something. But, ouch, for residents of Aotearoa.

It’s a considerable expense here, too, of course, and not designed to attract new fans and prices out dedicated followers, too, which is sad.

What’s the solution?

The Glam Slam show was SUPERB. Has Housequake apologizing today for saying P's best work ended in '88.

If it helps, my Australian friend would have to pay AUD $1050 for the record set, which is about $700USD.

There is practically no market for Prince here now, I would say it would sell maybe 50 copies in the next year if you are lucky. Even Real Groovy only has the 4CD/4 record set. It was the same with SOTT super deluxe, had to import it from the states.

The estate releasing overpriced sets like this is only pandering to hardcore fans. I mean we are dealing with an album released 32 years ago. The average chart watching Swiftie or buyer of Lil Baby and Travis singles was not even alive and their parents were children when D and P came out.

Plus Physical Music is getting old school, its all streaming now.

We need to face it, we are all old relics and parts of a bygone era.

Finally got it by Amazon, most of our record stores had never heard of it (Don't you love New Zealand, land of the stupid and ignorant at times). One told me to go to a jewellery store if I wanted Diamonds and Pearls. The others kept claiming the 2cd mix with the disc of mixes was the Mega Deluxe and there are no others (20 year old who listens to Mumble rap or a Swifty).

Anyway have managed to listen to first vault CD's while driving and so far, I want my $300 back! Schoolyard is awful, Spirit is dull and the rest is okay, funky at times - but lacks any inventiveness and just trend chasing music that sounds very 1989 rather than 1991. You can tell this is in Prince's autumn period. Most of the songs are okay and some like Martika's kitchen, Open Book and Don't say u love me. Something funky2this house comes is hellafunky - but its hardly Big Tall Wall or the Cocoa Boys. Glam Slam 91 is decent too and the mix of Horny Pony is nice too. But this is all solid B grade stuff, no outstanding A grade stuff yet.

Of all the vault tracks - my favourite is Alice through the looking glass, dark and funky.
Listened to original album again - no real change from 91 - the original sound and mastering was good anyway. The live concert I have started on - Thunder good, Daddy Pop ruined by Tony M's rapping (Skipped after 5 mins) and Diamonds and Pearls (song) fairly good - a lot of screaming, but they love Prince!

I think the rappy tracks have aged worse and the bombastic rapping of Tony M is just awful. I also think many of the vault songs are generally good, some like Alice and Get Blue are very good, but nothing would be classic or excellent - I just think Prince was offering nothing new in this period - they all sound like everything else on the New Jack Swing/Pop Rap craze of 1987 - 1992 and most of them sound 1988/89ish rather than 1991 (Meaning Prince was chasing trends and falling behind).

Still its a good historical document and sums the feel of that era well - plus there is a lot of energy here and the music is not as overloaded and leaden as Symbol and later NPG stuff is.

The only song I can't stand is Schoolyard - just some of the worst rapping and so try hard. Its creepy paedo music totally, a 32 year old man trying to cop a 14 - 16 year old schoolgirl. Was Prince getting his inner R Kelly on. I would say with his interest in 16 year old girls who are well developed (Ephebophilia - physcially mature but still child and underage mentally) and dating and sexing girls on their 18th birthday - is borderline creepy and semil legale.
