Taking Independent and Unofficial Back

Welcome 2 America

Stand Up and Be Strong seems to be getting a lot of love here. Not from me, I think it might be, together with Hot Summer, my least favourite track (a bit too Christian rock-y for my taste!).
The whole album is a nice surprise though. As some have mentioned, it is much more cohesive than anything he made after The Rainbow Children.
1000 Light Years Away, When She Comes and Check The Record are fantastic, as is One Day We Will All Be Free, so apparently simple and ‘breezy’ despite its subject matter (in that sense it reminds me a bit of The Word) and yet so freaking good.
The rest of the songs are ok, but the whole is definitely above average for me. Probably not his best album of the last two decades as that review said (for me that would be The Rainbow Children, closely followed by AOA), but a worthy addition to his discography.
Cool choice by the estate.

Thank you. It's not a bad original to be fair. This would have been great live. Did he ever do it live Squirrel?

I love the Soul Asylum original and I'm going to play it Friday on my show. In fact, I need to get more familiar with the Soul Asylum catalog.

I think you nailed it by saying it's cohesive for a 21st century Prince album. I also agree about it being a cool choice from the estate, I hadn't got excited for it; I hadn't even really given it much thought, but it really was a great choice. Funny how 'Stand Up and B Strong' seems to divide, but that's why Prince's music is so good - there's something for everyone.

One quick note: regardless of every one’s opinion of W2A (the more I listen the more I like it), the accuracy or not of the reviews, the bittersweetness of knowing that we’re only listening to it because Prince is no longer with us, and before we know how much it will sell… isn’t it great to have Prince all over the media and the internet again?

Just listened the whole way through plus the 7 inch............Really loving it- great Friday night while cooking supper, the box set is just beautifully put together. Even went and grabbed our wrist bands from the concert to make sure we hadn't lost them!
This does not disappoint!

Not as bad an album as I’d expected. Better than 20Ten for sure, though that’s a very low bar. I couldn’t go as far as calling it good, though.
The more I listen, the more I like it. I really do think it's a pretty good album for his 21st century offerings. I'm not sure whether I'd be giving it quite so much praise had he released it at the time though - I am aware that my perceptions have changed since he died and I'm a lot more open to some aspects of his music than I maybe was at times during his life.

I love to hear new music of Prince's but I am aware, also, that he shelved it.

I wish we could have access to his many outtakes and concert performances

His concert performances were the greatest! Over the years there were band members that performed with him that said how much of a perfectionist he was at rehearsals and they had to keep doing it again and again. but it shows when you look at any of his concert footage, he kept a tight band when he performed! Sign o' the Times is a great example of how great they performed together. I've watched that so many times! :)

Yes! I think that CD is one of his best! And all of the new information on the making of it makes it more interesting!

^^^ Amazon (once again) screwed my order, so I’m not getting it until tomorrow.
But I’m on holidays until the 19th…
So I’ll watch it then:mad:

After a temporary break (Covid, exams, too many hills where I live that I find too hard to run) I’ve finally gone for a run today… but I’ve listened to the album rather than the live show. It’s not great to run either. But I’m starting to love it…

Running is about the only time I get to listen to music nowadays. I've got a bit gluttonous for this period at the min, so downloading all the shows I can find. I've got the 14/05 lined up for my next run. I know you don't like it much, but Stand Up is the perfect running tune if you're tiring.
